On The Move is Derry and Raphoe Youth's flagship youth participation programme...
A five day event on the back of Summer Madness, designed to encourage young people to put their faith into action through doing acts of kindness and blessing local communities with no expectation of anything in return.
To bring the concepts of faith and service to life with young people as they practically outreach into local communities, serving them with no expectation of reward or thanks.
This event is also one where young people make new friendships, experience new challenges to their faith, and develop character through doing things they otherwise would never do. Eg painting an elderly couples fence.
The event is staged straight after Summer Madness for five days, culminating in a Church service to mark the end and also to give thanks to God for what He has done.
Breakfast is served in the central base, then teams gather for worship and team training before having lunch and heading off into the local community to undertake the tasks set out for them that afternoon. They will return to the central base for dinner before heading out again to either finish jobs or engage local young people in activities or general chat.
After this, teams gather again for some informal relaxing time before heading to bed.
How it meets the diocesan strategy:
Deeper: The practical application of faith in action serves to show young people how to lovie out their faith. It also helps them to link the theory to practice, alongside being stretched in their faith as they undertake some very unfashionable jobs which may not be their idea of service. All of this is combined with witnessing their leaders undertake the very same work, and it is hoped that this all feeds into a concept of being a humble servant. Matthew 20.28
Closer: In grouping young people from various places and parishes together, new friendships are formed. Shared experience and team work play a massive part in this event, and this all goes into growing closer as a diocese. The more young people who come, the closer our diocese will get.
Wider: In practically bringing the Good News onto the streets in the local community, this event both serves the place OTM is based, while also helping to broaden the understanding and horizons of young people who undertake to do this event. This is faith in action, therefore this event helps shape how young people view outreach and their understanding of why we do it.
