Every year DRY hosts a weekend for young people across the diocese...
The DRY weekend is held over a weekend in March with a guest speaker and modern worship. Youth groups come together with their leaders and it is open to any youth group or young person in the diocese. It is primarily and unashamedly geared to taking young people deeper in their faith.
The DRY weekend aims to strengthen and encourage young people in their faith, however it also seeks to stretch them to think about bringing Jesus into their everyday lives and interactions.
It is a key event in engaging young people into DRY, as the format of the weekend builds stronger relationships between various groups, their leaders and among young people. In providing social activities it is hoped that friendships grow and extend beyond diocesan events.
Modern worship lead by a skilled worship leader, structured and challenging talks from the front, times of response and prayer ministry alongside structured informal social activities which encourage friendship.
How it meets the diocesan strategy:
Deeper: The DRY weekend seeks to encourage young people to own their faith through Spirit filled worship and challenging teaching, alongside giving them space to respond in a structured and safe manner.
Closer: In encouraging groups to come each year it is hoped that friendships will develop through creating a community of young people with something in common. Through taking photos and making a video of the event, then placing it on facebook, it is hoped that these peer friendships will carry on outside diocesan boundaries and extend into their everyday lives as they add each other on Facebook and in turn look forward to meeting them at more diocesan events.
Wider: This event aims to encourage young people to take ownership of their faith, it also provides a platform to advertise other diocesan events, encourage young people to get involved and to come to our flagship event – On The Move.
In this respect, we are keen to emphasise the ‘outward facing’ aspect to our faith, in that we are on the lookout for opportunities to share and practice our faith, however as this event does not offer any practical opportunities to actually grow wider, the focus remains on Deeper and Closer.
